Laying Mosaic Tiles
In Aggregate Decking |
Step 1
|
First of all you must have a wooden template the same thickness as your
mosaic and approximately 3/8" larger
than your mosaic. This template is necessary so as to create a
cavity or hole in your decking for placement of the mosaic. On the right, we are using a template for our
large turtle mosaic shown on the right. We provide wooden templates for
your decking installation when you order your mosaic. There is a
small charge for this template.

Step 2

It is important to prepare the template for placement into the poured
aggregate by sealing the wooden template with petroleum jelly. This
will provide release for the template so that it comes out easily when the
concrete sets up. Simply rub petroleum jelly all over the template.
When the aggregate is poured, the worker presses the template into the
concrete and then places a weight
(a brick works fine) on it to keep it from floating. The worker then
smooths the aggregate to where it is even with with template.

Step 3
When aggregate sets up, (when you can walk on it),
templates should be carefully removed.
This can easily be done by placing some screws into the template at
several points, and then by grabbing the screws and gently pulling up.
If some of the aggregate is pulled away, you can generally repair the spot
with no problems. The concrete workers usually can help with this
part.

Step 4
|
After removing templates from the aggregate, you now have the cavity or
hole in the concrete which houses the mosaic. It is best to let the
aggregate harden for at least one day before proceeding to the next step.
Before proceeding with laying the mosaics, you should use regular masking
tape and tape around the edges of the holes so that the grout you use
doesn't penetrate into the aggregate and possibly stain it.

After mosaic cavities are masked, use regular tile laying techniques to
lay mosaic tiles. Using a Tile Set, trowel tile set into the cavity and
then place the mosaic onto the set. If centered properly, you should
have approximately 3/16" grout areas around the outside of the mosaic.
Be sure mosaic is flat and level with the surrounding aggregate.
Wait at least one hour after laying mosaic tiles before applying your
grout. After grout sets up, you should then remove the masking tape
and do a finishing cleanup.
